30 Carifta swim golds
BARBADOS struck it rich.
Fifty-two medals rich.
The ultramarine and gold couldn’t have commemorated the 30th CARIFTA Swimming Championships any better, achieving their second highest ever medal tally when they picked up 15 in last night’s final session to finish the four-day meet at the Aquatic Centre with 52 medals.
It was the stuff of which dreams are made, with the home team clearly feeding off rampant crowd support to land one short of past their previous best of 53 medals set in Guadeloupe back in 1998.
Yet the rain-drenched session did more than set local history, as the record-setting Bajans also went on to top both the gold medal standings after ending the championships with 30 victories.
But Barbados, who tallied 642.50 points, had to settle for second in the standings behind Bahamas in the points table (756.50) and total medal count (54).
