CHANGES BEING MADE to Barbados’ Road Traffic Act will deal with new and relatively new problems such as “wheelies” and other stunts performed by motorcyclists as well as distracted driving.
According to Minister of Transport Michael Lashley, amendments expected to go to Parliament shortly for approval would make the application of the legislation more specific in some cases.
He said there would be stiff penalties for “distracted driving”, which could include taking a “selfie” – a self-portrait – and texting or using a hand-held communications device while driving.
The legislation would also address the increasing problem of motorcyclists riding on one wheel or doing other stunts on the road, he reported while addressing the opening ceremony of a defensive driving course for Barbados Transport Board drivers. (TY)
