THERE IS no “gangster squad” in the Royal Barbados Police Force.
This was the police’s response to an article published on the Back Page of yesterday’s SUNDAY SUN with the headline Gangster Squad Needs No Backup.
“The article appears to be purporting that there is a ‘gangster squad’ established within the Royal Barbados Police Force. We wish to state that no such gangster squad exists within the force as mentioned in the article to deal with any recent spate of aggravated burglaries or any crimes within the island. We disassociate ourselves from the notion of a ‘gangster squad’,” the Press release stated.
“With respect to the recent spate of aggravated burglaries and robberies, a special investigative team was put in place to deal with these crimes. We wish to assure the citizens of Barbados that we have already made progress in respect to some of these aggravated burglaries and robberies and we continue to make steady progress in these matters.”
The statement, signed by public relations officer, Acting Assistant Superintendent David Welch, thanked “the members of the public for their cooperation so far and we request them to report any suspicious activities”.
“During policing investigations it is sometimes necessary to seek expertise in areas which are not available to us, and we will continue to do so in our policing efforts. At this stage of these particular investigations there is no need for such assistance,” the release ended. (JS/PR)
