THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH is worried that some food handlers are not washing their hands as often as they should.

Trevor Taylor, an environmental health officer within the ministry, made the admission yesterday at the opening of a food handlers’ workshop at the Harmony Hall, St Michael complex of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU).

“One of the main issues we found is that, especially in outdoor catering, which poses a high risk of food becoming contaminated, the staff especially . . . they don’t wash their hands enough. We still find that a major concern in our department.”

He said there were also concerns about the way some food handlers dressed.

“The dress mode is very critical. We’re still seeing a lot of people wearing cap sleeves with the armpits showing, This is not allowed.” (TY)
