Call to banish child neglect
BARBADOS HAS LAUNCHED its celebration of Child Month with calls to reduce the incidence of abuse and neglect of children.
“The prevention of child abuse and neglect of children is a social responsibility that we all must bear,” Minister of Social Care Steve Blackett said yesterday while addressing a national children’s service at New Dimensions Ministries on Barbarees Hill, St Michael.
He was joined by pastor of New Dimensions Ministries, Sandra Holford, who said that while instilling discipline was important, parents were not to be abusive of their children and were not to use their fists on them or “curse” them.
Parents had a responsibility to “take good care” of children, who were a gift from God, she told the congregation, which included officials of the Child Care Board. (TY)
