WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING the impact job cuts have had on the island’s women and mothers, the National Organization of Women (NOW) has used the occasion of Mother’s Day to salute all mothers.
President of NOW, Marilyn Rice-Bowen, noted that 44.2 per cent of the households in the country are headed by single women, adding it has to be really challenging when one cannot do what one is supposed to do as a mother.
She noted that whenever there is high unemployment, women will be placed at a great disadvantage.
“And against that backdrop, NOW applauds mothers as they celebrate Mother’s Day. We salute women who make countless sacrifices on a daily basis in order to meet the needs of their family.
“We recognize that at times it could be challenging but because of their resilience and commitment to family they do all in their power to ensure that the family unit is protected,” Rice-Bowen said.
Rice-Bowen said NOW recognized that quite a few women would have been made redundant as a result of the recession and as a result they would find it challenging to feed, shelter their families.
Therefore, NOW will shortly be looking to offer conversational Spanish and basic computer skills to help unemployed and underemployed women make themselves more marketable. (PR)
