Abstinence ‘an option’

A SENIOR TRADE UNIONIST wants greater emphasis to be placed on abstinence in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Orlando “Gabby” Scott, senior assistant general secretary of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), has made it clear he is not a fan of the television promotion which speaks to “wrapping it up”.

Scott, the BWU’s leading voice on occupational health and safety in the workplace, said: “We are aware that some of the big donors are not so enamoured about the promotion of abstinence because they feel it does not work. But some of us still believe that doing the right thing ought to be pursued.

“We understand why the creator or producer of the ads may use the language of the target audience, but condom use, important as it is – that is “wrapping it up” – is not the only means of prevention.” (ES)
