GOVERNMENT MINISTER Michael Lashley has appealed to marshals to adopt a “more humane approach” when dealing with tenants the court has ordered to vacate lots.
“The law is the law, but marshals have to understand that in carrying it out they are dealing with human beings,” Lashley told the DAILY NATION.
He was reacting to the dismantling, under the supervision of marshals, of the three-bedroom timber home of one of his St Philip North constituents, Livvy Eastmond, on Friday afternoon. Eastmond, 66, had been living on the spot at Church Village for 40 years.
Lashley said the pensioner was not at home when it happened and therefore was not in a position to secure valuable documents and other possessions. Some parts of the structure as well as furnishings were damaged, he added. (TY)
