West Indies win opening match on Sri Lanka tour

DEANDRA DOTTIN and captain Merissa Aguilleira rescued the West Indies women who won their opening ODI match on the tour of Sri Lanka by five wickets on Wednesday in Colombo.

With West Indies tottering on 41 for four, Dottin and Aguilleira came together for a 70-run fifth wicket partnership to lay the platform for the team’s 153 for five in reply to Sri Lanka’s 149.

Dottin scored an unbeaten 84 off 113 balls and Aguilleira scored 30, before Stacy-Ann King chipped in with 18 not out.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were all out with one ball remaining. Wicketkeeper Prasadini Weerakkody scored 42 and Sripali Weerakkody added 24 not out.

Hayley Matthews took three wickets for 19 runs and Anisa Mohammed two for 15.

The teams will play three more One-Day Internationals which will count towards the ICC Women’s Championships, and three T20s.
