THE Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) has managed to get the Barbados Light & Power Company Limited (BL&P) to admit it breached established protocol when it made the first 73 people redundant in its restructuring plan.
Following a near six-hour meeting yesterday at the Ministry of Labour, which was chaired by Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer and ended around 8:30 p.m., both the union and the minister said the process in Barbados was not just about following the labour laws, but also industrial relations customs and practices.
“Yes, there were some aspects of the protocol that were not adhered to, and I think that is because they were not spoken to by the [legislation] itself,” Byer said.
