Lashley: Youth policy a success

“WE ARE ON course to achieve many of the goals of the National Youth Policy (NYP).”

This assertion came from Minister of Youth, Stephen Lashley, while speaking at a workshop on Evidence-Based Policies on Youth Development in the Caribbean at the Radisson Aquatica Resort on Tuesday.

The Minister stated that the preliminary mid-term evaluation of the National Youth Policy suggested that great progress had been made in the accomplishment of the various goals that had been set up.

The Minister stated that the National Summer Camp Programme, the establishment of a mentorship and job placement programme for at risk young people, and the training of people in various sports disciplines on an annual basis, were all areas where the NYP had been successful in positively impacting the lives of the nation’s youth.

Referring to the workshop the Youth Minister declared: “I am of the view that it is important that our youth policies resonate in the post-2015 development landscape, and that there must be synergistic relationships between Government Ministries and developmental and civil society organisations in order to fully realise the aspirations of our youth…. We are confident that the outcome of these discussions would assist us greatly in pushing towards the final evaluation of the success of our national youth policy as we look towards the post 2015 agenda.”

The workshop was sponsored by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Commonwealth Secretariat. (BGIS)
