Veteran ladies show off

VETERAN Susan Scantlebury and Margo Lorde put on a display of superb tennis when the Touch of Class Freida Nicholls Women’s Road Tennis Tournament continued at the Deighton “Pa” Roach Tennis Centre on Wednesday night.

With a big crowd turning out for the second night of action, the players provided endless entertainment until just after midnight. Unfortunately for last year’s losing finalist, Rachel Smith, that bewitching hour brought defeat to the resolute Scantlebury 21-17, 21-19.

Scantlebury, who once represented Barbados in netball, played a game of purely stout defence with a periodic raised leg on some of her returns proving her most exciting shot. However, the aggression of Smith led to an implosion and even saw Scantlebury stunning the crowd with an uncharacteristic smash in the first game.
