Crisis warning on agro sector

A SENIOR CIVIL SERVANT has warned of a potential crisis in Barbados’ agricultural sector because of an ageing farming community.

However, chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society, James Paul, disagrees.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture Esworth Reid yesterday expressed fears that the agriculture sector and the island’s food security “will be seriously compromised in the very near future” if action is not taken to replenish the stock of farmers.

“We have already reached, or are bordering, crisis stages when it comes to the agricultural sector.
