BARBADOS Light & Power Co. Ltd (BL&P) has turned its back on the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) and instead of returning to the bargaining table, gave 19 workers their walking papers yesterday morning.

BL&P’s human resources manager Roger Babooram said the power company felt there was no reason to continue negotiating with the BWU and the Labour Department since it was making no headway after seven sessions in over 80 hours going back to early April.

In a conference call with journalists to explain the decision, Babooram said up to 95 workers had lost their jobs from BL&P through voluntary and forced separations. The total staff count now stands at 360.
