Waste plant ‘means end to landfills’

GOVERNMENT’S PLANS for a controversial multimillion-dollar plasma gasification plant at the designated waste management area in Vaucluse, St Thomas, will mean an end to landfills by 2025.

The promise was made yesterday by Minister of the Environment Dr Denis Lowe, who insisted that contrary to Opposition assertions, generations of Barbadians would not be saddled with millions of dollars in debt because of the plant said to cost $700 million.

During debate in the House of Assembly on the 2015-2016 Budget, Lowe responded to charges by Opposition Leader Mia Mottley on Tuesday that four ministers had sealed a deal with the Canadian company, Cahill Energy, without Cabinet having seen the power purchase agreement or it being signed off by the Attorney General or the Solicitor General.
