AKELA JONES has never been the typical female. Like the fortune seekers of years ago, Jones has spent most of her nights sitting up in bed thinking about gold and numbers.
However, that gold has nothing to do with the filthy lucre which has destroyed so many prospectors’ lives, but rather Olympic gold which has occupied her mind since moving from Hilda Skeene Primary to Springer Memorial before setting ablaze the NCAA Division 1 in the United states.
Similarly, the numbers are not those which bookkeepers are concerned with but moreso dates, 2016 and 2020 when many in Barbados and believe that the powerfully built six-footer will strike gold.
With a childhood far removed from luxury or good fortune, Jones has taken every opportunity and even straw to spin into gold. In her first year at Kansas State, she won the Collegiate Award in pre-training to set a pattern of awards and successes which awed any few remaining doubters.
