NUPW: Shutdown no joke
IT HAS BEEN 24 YEARS but the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is warning that 2015 may be the time for the union to shut down Barbados in mass protest.
In a defiant mood and clearly offended by the decision of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) to send home 13 workers over the age of 60 on the eve of a scheduled meeting with the union, top NUPW officials insisted the disrespect had to end now.
NUPW president Akanni McDowall told the WEEKEND NATION yesterday that workers across scores of statutory corporations were angry at the latest move and he planned to meet with his counterpart Toni Moore, of the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU), to prepare for possible joint action.
