THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY General, Kamalesh Sharma, has pledged his solidarity with, and support for Guyana.

During a press conference held earlier today in the Peninsula Suite at Hilton Barbados Sharma stated that the Commonwealth “is giving its full support” to Guyana during the Venezuela/Guyana border disputes.

He declared that it was a “position which the Commonwealth has taken steadfastly for a long period of time because of recent developments”. He also indicated that it is an issue which would be discussed at an upcoming Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Reiterating the Commonwealth’s awareness of the issue, he stressed: “We have taken due note of developments and this has been recognised and appreciated.”

However, when questioned about the mass deportation of Haitian nationals and descendants out of the Dominican Republic, Sharma said: “I am really not engaged in that one, because neither of these two countries are members of the Commonwealth.”

The Venezuela/Guyana border disputes date as far back as the 1800’s. (BGIS)
