PM: Strike call hasty
WITH A NATIONAL STRIKE looming in Barbados, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart believes the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) was too hasty to choose this course of action.
Speaking just minutes ago following the closure of the 36th Annual Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, Stuart told the media all the usual avenues for ending the dispute had not been pursued.
The NUPW, with support from the Barbados Workers’ Union, and members of Coalition of Trade Unions and Staff Associations, plans to take to the streets on Monday to protest the forced dismissal of 13 Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) workers who were over the age of 60.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Donville Inniss maintained that BIDC followed procedures and offered the workers a full compensation package.
The NUPW, on the other hand, wants the dismissal letter retracted or the workers paid their full salaries up to the age of 67. (GE)
