Chancel ready by August
THE CHANCEL of St Michael’s Cathedral should be fully restored by next month in the first phase of a multimillion-dollar restoration project.
As he watched workmen carrying out repairs on the chancel’s interior and exterior over the weekend, outgoing Dean Dr Frank Marshall eagerly anticipated the return of normalcy to services at the mother church of the local Anglican community. “We expect to have the chancel back by August and we will remove the screen,” he said with enthusiasm.
Services at the Cathedral have been confined to the church’s nave for over a year, while a towering black curtain of plastic sheeting has shielded the sight of work going on behind the curtain in the chancel – the section of the church near the altar, reserved for the clergy and choir.
