Fewer scholarships for BCC

THE Barbados Community College (BCC) is reporting a drop in the number of Canadian scholarships given to nationals.

The figure is down by almost half from the estimated 15 granted last year.

Registrar Sydney Arthur has blamed the situation on the BCC’s inability to maintain contact with Canadian learning institutions.

“I’m very disappointed because my target for this year would have been about 50 students. As you can imagine there are lots of university and colleges in Canada . . . and even if an institution says, ‘we’ll take three or four students’, it adds up,” he told the DAILY NATION.

The BCC has signed memoranda of understanding with about 21 institutions that are part of the programme.

And Arthur said he was hoping to build relationships with universities so that the number of scholarships recipients would have increased to as many as 50 this year.
