Granny Walcott passes on

BARBADOS has lost one of its oldest pioneers in the restaurant business.

Founder of the legendary Granny’s restaurant at Oistins, Evelyn “Granny” Walcott, passed away at her Enterprise Coast Road, Christ Church home on Tuesday night after a prolonged illness.

Ninety-six-year-old “Granny” Walcott, as she was known to many, operated the canteen at the former Christ Church Boys’ Foundation School for more than 40 years and was highly regarded by generations of students of that school and the adjacent Christ Church Girls’ Foundation School.

She later opened and operated Granny’s in Oistins, attracting countless patrons long before the Oistins Bay Garden became a popular haunt for thousands of Barbadians and visitors each week. The business was subsequently expanded to another two branches in Bridgetown and at the Grantley Adams International Airport, but these were eventually closed.
