Husbands triumph at chess tourney

WHEN THE GOING gets tough,  the tough get going.

Barbados’ highest rated player Orlando Husbands shrugged off  the emotional trauma of an alleged physical attack to emerge the Caribbean Chess Carnival Under-20 champion in dramatic fashion here yesterday.

Needing nothing less than a win in his final-round match against tournament leader Joshua Johnson of Trinidad and Tobago, the 18-year-old Husbands barely squeezed out a victory in a tense four-hour contest in which he sealed his amazing triumph with less than a minute left on the clock.

Husbands’ victory carried him to five-and-a-half points, the same as Jamaican Shreyas Smith and Trinidadian Mahendra Singh, but the Barbadian was declared the champion on the fifth stage of the tie-breaker.
