‘Put spark’ back in City

CHARTERED TOWN PLANNER  Dr Yolanda Alleyne believes the emergence of new urban centres is contributing to the decline of Bridgetown and she has suggested revitalization of Barbados’ capital city be done in tandem with suburban development.

“You can’t revitalise Bridgetown and not plan for some type of control in the suburban centres,” Alleyne argued when she delivered the Urban Development Commission’s 18th anniversary lecture Monday night at the Commission’s Bridge Street headquarters.

Speaking on the topic Empowering And Enriching Urban Communities, Alleyne said one of the biggest issues facing Barbados was sub-urbanisation. With a growing urban corridor stretching from St Lucy through Bridgetown and Oistins to St Philip, there were fewer people wanting to live in Bridgetown, the town planner said.
