EVEN though there has not been a “catastrophic increase” in gun-related crimes, Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith says there is a large volume of illegal firearms on the streets in Barbados.

So far for the year, 33 firearms have been recovered, compared to 29 for the same period last year.

Griffith said he could not estimate how many guns were in the hands of the criminal element but admitted: “Even though we are taking weapons off the street, the inflow is such that the volume on the island remains large.”

He made the comments yesterday during a Press conference at Police Headquarters on Roebuck Street, Bridgetown, to update the public  on the crime situation, especially  gun-related crimes.

“To date there are 134 cases of firearm-related crimes as opposed to 128 for the previous year. That increase of six is not really a catastrophic increase,” the commissioner said, though he acknowledged that there had been a spike of gun activity in recent weeks.
