LEADING BUSINESSMAN Eddie Abed wants all Barbadians to pay at least $5 a week in “direct taxes”.
Abed, who is the senior vice-president of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), is also advocating the introduction of “a user fee” for some social services.
Speaking at the BCCI’s latest luncheon yesterday at Hilton Barbados, he also urged the Social Partnership to soften such a blow by reconsidering the existing wage freeze while finding “the political will to balance the national budget”.
The managing director of Abed & Co. Ltd was concerned that “80 per cent of the employed in this country do not pay direct taxes yet enjoy full access to all social services”.
