‘Change or perish’

Gridlock!

That’s the current state of Barbados’ economic affairs as vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Sir Hilary Beckles, sees it, and he attributes the malaise to Government’s social policy.

The distinguished academic told an audience at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination on Tuesday night Barbados could not go into the next 50 years of Independence in the present situation.

He said the policical parties were in need of ideological and intellectual renewal and “to go into the next 50 years like this will destroy the country”.

Delivering the VII Leo Leacock Memorial Lecture as part the Small Business Association’s Small Business Week celebrations, Sir Hilary declared: “I would advise all the political parties to go into retreat and get a new wind; change the whole paradigm.”
