GALLE, SRI LANKA – Opener Dimuth Karunaratne produced a third Test century of resolve and refinement here yesterday as Sri Lanka made full use of favourable batting conditions to rack up 250-2 despite a battling West Indies bowling effort on the opening day of the first Test.
The left-hander produced a chanceless display, batting throughout the day for an unbeaten 135 off 288 deliveries.
In six and a quarter hours, Karunaratne struck 10 fours and a nerveless six that took him past three figures and betrayed a confident young man.
Dinesh Chandimal was an assured ally in compiling an unbeaten 72 off 146 balls. The pair shared an unbroken third wicket stand of 149 in the final half of the day to defy the tourists.
