Hockey girls back with silver lining

A JUBILANT national women’s hockey team returned home yesterday to the shouts and cheers of a large group of supporters that turned out to welcome them at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

The Barbados team, despite numerous challenges in their preparation, still managed to finish second at the Pan American Challenge in Chicalayo, Peru. They finished runners-up to repeat champions Brazil after they lost 3-1 in the final on Sunday.

President of the Barbados Hockey Federation, David Rouse, was among the many officials who turned up to greet the team. He had earlier this year voiced some concerns he had about the preparation of the team but admitted he wasn’t surprised that they made it to the final.

“There were a lot of challenges but I wasn’t surprised because I expected them to go to the final. I would have been a bit surprised if we had won the gold medal but I wasn’t surprised that we made it to the final.
