A HIGH COURT JUDGE is about to “clear the jails of persons on remand” to investigate the backup of more than 300 cases involving as many as 400 remanded accused.

Justice Jacqueline Cornelius served notice yesterday that from Monday the No. 5 Supreme Court will be investigating 50 cases a day to determine their readiness for trial.

The move comes as the No. 2 and No. 5 Supreme Courts struggle to get trials under way after more than six weeks into the Continuous Sitting of the criminal sessions.

Judicial officers, lawyers, defendants and victims have been complaining about the long wait for justice, more than five years in many cases. (TKS)
