BARBADOS IS SHAPING up to be the showcase of the world for the conversion from oil to clean green energy.

Chief executive officer of Emera Inc., Chris Huskilson, said that was the vision for Emera and its subsidiary Barbados Light & Company (BL&P) now that work at the St Lucy-based ten-megawatt solar plant was set to get underway following the ground-breaking ceremony yesterday.

The $40 million, 42-acre solar photovoltaic plant will consist of more than 46 000 solar panels and provide energy for more than 7 700 homes.

Huskilson said they expected an immediate saving when the plant becomes functional in August next year. The savings would be passed on to customers on their monthly light bills, he added. (YB)
