STREET BEAT: Things Bajan

Date:

Share post:

WITH INDEPENDENCE and Christmas around the corner, Street Beat will be taking a look at two aspects of Bajan life – food and culture.

Almost every Bajan of a certain age knows the song Bridgetown Market by Anthony “Gabby” Carter and few places personify this as does the Barbados Association of Retailers, Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN) market in Cheapside, The City.

All sorts of fruit and vegetables are sold. Also on sale are traditional Bajan delicacies such as conkies, sweet bread, fish cakes and pone.

A small group was gathered around Tomo’s where those treats were ready and waiting.

Betty Lord said coming to the BARVEN market was a regular routine for her.

“Whenever I come in this market, I normally get fish cakes and pone. It’s not a Christmas or Independence thing for me as these are available every day. Plus the food here is tasty,” she said. (CA)
