THE BARBADOS Table Tennis Association (BTTA) and the National Sports Council (NSC) appear to be at loggerheads after the latter granted local player Tyrese Knight funds to contest an ongoing tournament in Portugal against the wishes of the BTTA’s executive committee.

A source close to the situation revealed to WEEKENDSPORT the BTTA initially approved the gifted 16-year-old’s participation at the Portugal Junior and Cadet Open, but that was only after his mother Cherry Newton-Knight – a floor member of the BTTA – said he had already secured sponsorship.

However, the source disclosed the NSC agreed to finance Knight between $7 000 and $9 000 although the BTTA never requested those funds or even approached the Sports Council on that matter.

Furthermore, BTTA president Ray Jackman wrote acting chief executive officer of the NSC, Jerry Blenman, to inform him of the executive’s decision not to approve of any funding request . . . (JM)
