BARBADOS’ second state-run elderly day care centre will come on stream December 7.

Formerly a senior citizens home, the refurbished Jorris Dunner Elderly Day Care Centre at Golden Rock, The Pine, St Michael, was built at a cost of $200 000 and had been in the works since May.

National Assistance Board (NAB) chairman Senator Reverend Dr David Durant said that the facility was a welcome addition – with the other centre being the Geriatric Hospital – as attention on the elderly was of the utmost importance.

“We are quite aware that Barbados has an ageing population. We have about 280 000 and we have the highest percentage of persons age 65 and over in the English-speaking Caribbean,” he said.  (AD)
