Surf’s up for special children
SEVENTEEN differently-abled children experienced the joy of the beach as Christian Surfers Barbados teamed up with the Variety Club yesterday.
The event saw the children, some of whom use a wheelchair, take to the water at Pebbles Beach on long boards for what, for some, was their first surf lesson.
Melanie Pitcher, one of the organisers of the event, said the last time the two organisations teamed up to treat the children to surfing lessons was four years ago.
The response then, said Pitcher, was “wonderful” and that motivated the local surfers to hold the event this year. At least five of those children were back for their second lesson yesterday.
