Barrels galore at port

THE BRIDGETOWN PORT is bursting at the seams this Christmas.

But Barbadians should have no fear in relation to getting their barrels or other cargo cleared from the Harbour Road, St Michael facility over the next two weeks.

The port has been forced to transform itself into a virtual 24-hour business, increasing its Shed 2 staff complement by 50 per cent in an effort to clear more than 25 000 barrels before December 25. That number is not new, but the port plans to be more efficient in how it does business, and is now averaging the clearance of about 320 barrels every day.

“We are going flat out now,” chief executive officer David Jean-Marie told the SUNDAY SUN. “We are extending hours, we are bringing on more staff and we are bent on being more efficient so Barbadians can get their stuff cleared from the port in a timely manner,” said the chief.
