Joint effort to help St Thomas folk

NEEDY people in the St Thomas constituency will be fed, thanks to the So All May Eat (SAME) programme and the Robinson Smiles Foundation.

Coordinator of SAME, Faye Martindale, and her assistant Angela Nurse were busy Saturday at the Holy Innocents Church rectory preparing food hampers for distribution.

Martindale explained that SAME was conceptualised last May by the priest at Holy Innocents Church, Anthony Harewood, to assist the poor in their community.

She praised Julia Robinson, a Barbadian living in Maryland who operates the Robinson Smiles Foundation, for coming to their assistance and sending foodstuff to them twice.

“That has been fantastic. That has really pushed us along because at the end of last year we were sort of struggling,” Martindale said.

Robinson said she came up with the idea to start a food bank after she received emails from Barbadians asking for food.

“I called Holy Innocents Church since I am familiar with the church and the area and proposed the idea of supplying food to their SAME programme on a quarterly basis. This idea was welcomed with great excitement.”

While the food is usually collected from friends and family, Robinson said she asked people this year to donate canned and dried goods for her 20th wedding anniversary instead of gifts, and this was a huge success.

“The food will benefit the sick and shut-ins, the unemployed, families with children with special needs and simply families who just cannot afford to eat,” she said. (MB)
