MAVIS BECKLES: Bare Christmas for some folk

SOME PEOPLE does still look at Christmas as only a day and forget dat it is a day, yes, but a day within the season when we celebrate the birth of Christ. But some people does barely see it as a time tuh eat as duh like, drink ’til duh stupid and barely get on foolish.

Christmas Day was yesterday and duh had some people who did’nt see it as a time tuh celebrate at all, as all like now so, duh barely making ends meet after being outta work fuh the entire year or longer. So the lot o’ gift-giving and buying was outta the question.

Some people wake up Christmas morning and barely drag demselves outta bed but didn’t want tuh because this season, dat is supposed tuh be filled with peace, joy, love, happiness and all that is good, does only bring back all kinds o’ bad memories and a lot o’ heartache and pain.

Tuh dem, Christmas brings no joy anymore as some o’ dem had family and dear friends who passed away – some suddenly, some through sickness and some tragically, all in this very season.

Still grieving

Some people can’t seem tuh let go and are still grieving. So how duh gine celebrate then? Tuh dem, what is there tuh celebrate?

To a lot o’ people, this season is too much stress and duh cahn deal wid it.

First, duh does be miserable when duh cahn get from one place tuh the next wid all the lot o’ traffic pon the roads all the time.

They have become so detached from the season dat it doan mean one thing tuh dem fuh whatevah reason. Duh does barely be going through the motions and cahn wait fuh it tuh come and guh ’long bout it business.

Duh got another set o’ people who love it but hate it because duh ain’t got a soul tuh spend it wid. So, duh there all by demselves and lonely. They barely spend the time listening tuh Christmas music pon the radio or watching TV programmes of people enjoying Christmas somewhere.

Can hardly wait

There are those people who love the very sound of Christmas; it cahn get here fast enough.

As far as they concern, it is barely a time tuh make as much money as duh can in a short space o’ time.

I talking bout some business people, the ones who does be praying fuh November tuh move out quick so dat dem could advertise, display and sell off duh Christmas stock. They does be barely waiting tuh get the jump-start pon the competition.

But I pray fuh all these people in all their circumstances dat despite whatevah they might be going through in this season, they might not see it as a bare Christmas, but somehow they would find the peace dat this season brings.
