Ghost town greets visitors
BRIDGETOWN TEEMED WITH passengers from five cruise ships docked at the Bridgetown Port yesterday, but the visitors could only window shop on their one-day trip.
Every store was closed on the New Year’s Day bank-holiday, making Bridgetown appear like a ghost town in sharp contrast to the days leading up to the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays.
The scene back then was of gridlock, heavily-laden shoppers dashing about shoulder to shoulder, taking advantage of long opening business hours intended to facilitate them.
Yesterday, however, when cruise ships Britannia, Mein Schiff 3, Arcadia, Braemar and Costa Magica brought about 13 000 passengers to the island, not even a souvenir stall could be spotted mounted anywhere.
