Absenteeism sore point for BPSA

ABSENTEEISM is a major challenge to a productive working environment in Barbados, and Barbadians must work four times as hard if they are to be nearly as productive as other countries.

This view was expressed by chairman of the Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA), Alex McDonald, during Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks’ Sagicor Business Review radio show with moderator David Ellis yesterday.

McDonald, one of five in-studio panellists, said absenteeism was a major issue that affected both local and international businesses but Barbados’ fundamental problem was that people were not turning up for work.

“We have twice as much absenteeism per head [as] anyone in the OECS [Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States]. Compared to the Latin America and [United States] average where they have businesses, we are four times worse in coming to work.”
