THE ONLY Barbadian in the West Indies squad for the ICC Under-19 World Cup is embracing his opportunity with mixed emotions.

All-rounder Shamar Springer, a 17-year-old Combermere student who is in the 15-member West Indies squad leaving for Bangladesh today, said yesterday he was pleased to be a part of the line-up but he felt sad for those who did not make the team.

“It’s mainly a bittersweet feeling. I know a couple of the guys here are capable of being on the team as well, but they didn’t perform as well as they needed to. On the other hand, it’s a heart-warming feeling to be a part of this Under-19 team,” he told MIDWEEKSPORT.

Springer said that there were also a number of young men in the region who competed for a spot in the squad and he must have been chosen because there was something special about him. He was glad for the opportunity to show his skill, he added.
