Sandbank of trouble
THE MARINE PHENOMENON at the mouth of the Careenage has proven costly to the owners of two visiting yachts.
And in the wake of damage to the two boats, marine officials that moved swiftly to make sure the expanding and building sandbank, where the Coast Guard’s Fort Willoughby was once located, was marked. However, a permanent solution seems to be some months away.
The sandbank, which was first noticed last June, has grown to the point where it is now blocking more than half of the mouth of the waterway. The build-up of sand has reduced the depth of the water from at least ten feet to a two-foot wading area.
