Daughter’s punishment by principal ‘not fair’
THE MOTHER of a fourth form student of Springer Memorial Secondary School is contending that her daughter is being unfairly treated by the administration of the school – action that is retarding her education.
Elecia Weekes has complained that her daughter was ordered by her year-head to remove an empty wrapper that was on the ground in a classroom.
When her daughter refused, she said, she was taken to the principal who asked her why she refused. The student is reported to have responded: “My mother did not send me to school to pick up any garbage!”
Weekes further charged that after her daughter’s response to the principal, she was described as rude and was instructed to pick up other refuse as a form of discipline.
To facilitate this she was taken to the school’s auditorium and told to clean up the garbage left by children who had eaten lunch there. When the girl again refused she was made to sit outside the guidance counsellor’s office for the remainder of the week, the mother told the WEEKEND NATION.
