A SENIOR gynaecologist is suggesting that Barbadian women not seek to have children until further medical investigations reveal how widespread the Zika virus is in Barbados.

“I recommend women in Barbados delay getting pregnant until it is found out how widespread Zika is and those who are pregnant to take precautions,” obstetrics consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr Wayne Welch, told the SUNDAY SUN.

The mosquito-borne virus, now spreading rapidly in some countries of the Americas, has been circumstantially linked to a rise of a severe birth defect in Brazil.

“There are some people here who are afraid of catching the virus but I advise them, if they get symptoms, to get tested to see if they are producing antibodies against it, which is how we know they are infected,” Welch said.
