Patriots show true colours
As part of the Nation Publishing Company’s 50th Anniversary of Independence celebrations the Weekend Nation team will visit communities across the country that reflect Bajan life. We will talk to people and explore places over the next few editions.
WITH THIS YEAR being the 50th anniversary of Independence, examples of patriotism can be seen nationwide. You just need to know where to look.
One place is near Valerie in Brittons Hill, St Michael, at the home of Everton Smith. The small businessman has painted and designed his produce stall in the traditional blue, yellow and black in an effort to keep spirits high.
“I had it so from Independence for the celebrations and I’m keeping it now for the 50th year. I like to keep Barbados on the bright side despite all the complaints because throughout the Caribbean, you see people love to see their flags and to bond with their national colours so I just playing my part to uplift community spirit,” he said.
Smith, a screenprinter/graphic artist by trade, did all the work himself and plans to maintain it for the year and beyond.
