You’re not going to get any sympathy from “Dessie”.

He may be old school, but former Windies opener Desmond Haynes believes the “spirit of the game” arguments are outdated, having staunchly defended Keemo Paul’s controversial match-winning run-out against Zimbabwe at the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

“Present day cricket determines that a guy is playing to win and you see it in all other sports people play to win [so] I believe the spirit of the game thing is a little too old now for what is happening in present day cricket,” said Haynes of the contentious play.

“The thing that I would always want to say to a youngster when they’re playing cricket is to play within the rules and if the youngster is playing within the rules then I’m saying they shouldn’t be getting any criticism at all in a negative way.”
