BARBADIANS AT HOME and in the diaspora have been invited to participate in a design competition for a monument to mark Barbados’ 50th Anniversary of Independence.

A Barbados at Fifty Monument Committee has been established to facilitate the commissioning of the design and the installation/construction of the monument by October 30, 2016, at the Garrison Savannah.

The competition will consist of five stages, the first of which will be open to all Barbadians at home and in the diaspora. It is intended to encourage participation from as wide and varied a field as possible. Those selected from Stage One will be invited to proceed to Stage Two.

Each submission must be accompanied by a short abstract of no more than 100 words, which explains the design idea and concept. Designers are required to pay particular attention to the existing uses and activities which the Garrison Savannah currently accommodates, including the annual Independence Parade. Designers are expected to consider the sustainability of their proposals and the ease and regularity of maintenance.

Each participant will be awarded with a certificate of participation, and a selection of the submissions will form a public exhibition. There will be a series of special Seeds of the Future prizes for participants under the age of 25. Five monetary prizes of $7 000 each will be awarded at Stage Two, while the overall winner of the competition will receive $20 000.

A completed registration form must accompany each entry, and each piece of the submission must have the entrant’s National Registration number affixed. No name, motif or distinguishing mark should appear on the submissions.

All entries for Stage One should be securely packaged and contained in a sealed envelope bearing the entrant’s registration number, and must be submitted not later than 4 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2016, to the Barbados at Fifty Monument Design Competition, 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebration Secretariat, 1st Floor, Old Town Hall Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown, Barbados.

The full list of guidelines for the Barbados at Fifty Design Competition can be obtained from the 50th Anniversary of Independence Celebrations Secretariat’s website at www.50Barbados.com; or from the Barbados Government Information Service’s website at www.gisbarbados.gov.bb. (BGIS)
