Region sets tourism record

WITH A RECORD 28.7 million visitors last year, the Caribbean outperformed every other tourism region in the world.
And at a news conference at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO) headquarters yesterday to give an update on the industry, secretary general of the CTO, Hugh Riley, said for the first time ever, the region had set new arrival and tourist spend records “far surpassing expectations”. He added visitors contributed approximately $30 billion to Caribbean economies in 2015.
He also reported a positive outlook for 2016.
Riley told the media here and throughout the Caribbean via the streamed news conference that last year’s performance was above the global growth rate of 4.4 per cent projected by the World Tourism Organisation for 2015.
