THE MAN who raised the Barbados Flag over a newly independent nation  on November 30, 1966, is calling on Barbadians to pay more attention to the meaning of Independence.

Hartley Dottin has expressed concern about certain behaviours displayed by some of the island’s young people and said Barbadians must seek to learn more about themselves to carry the island forward another 50 years.

Dottin was the young lieutenant in the Barbados Regiment chosen for the historic role 50 years ago and he shared his memories of that historic night with an audience at the Holetown Methodist Church on Monday. His was the first in the Alfred Pragnell Memorial Lecture series organised as part of the annual Holetown Festival.

Dottin observed how Barbados had moved from dependence to “intra-dependence” over the last five decades within the framework of CARICOM, a progression, he noted, from the initial uncertainty and doubt harboured by some Barbadians about going it alone.
