DEACONS PRIMARY joined others in celebrating African Awareness Month but with a twist of its own.

Students and staff at the school in Bird’s River Gap, Deacons, St Michael, yesterday formed the map of Africa to bring an end to the month in which Africa took the spotlight.

Over the last four weeks the classrooms were transformed to reflect the animals, games, food and culture of the continent, with one room set up as a closet for African fabric, including its drapes. The children and staff also heard from historian Trevor Marshall, who linked local dishes and lifestyles to Africa. The Barbados Landship was also part of the celebrations. (AC)
